The OSU Monthly Campaign Update tracks progress toward our $625 million campaign goal, celebrates successes along the way, and, above all, showcases the impact philanthropy makes on OSU students, the state of Oregon, and our world.

Monthly Highlights

As of February 28, 2009, commitments to The Campaign for OSU total $490 million, which includes $58 million in commitments this fiscal year alone. Learn more about campaign progress.

This month's update pays tribute to OSU faculty and staff whose gifts are enhancing virtually every area of the university. To name just a few:

Impact

Faculty and Staff Show Passion for OSU

While the times are affecting OSU fundraising, one of the bright points in recent reports comes from the university's extraordinary faculty and staff, both current and retired. Their gifts to the OSU Fund (<$25,000) from July 1, 2008, to Feb. 28, 2009, are $71,856 above this period last year, when the total was $267,521.

While many faculty and staff express their passion for their own field with gifts to department unrestricted funds and research funds, others support scholarships, the arts, OSU Libraries, and funds in honor of family members or esteemed colleagues. Whether the steady support provided by payroll deduction pledges or a major planned gift from one's estate, every gift from faculty and staff demonstrates pride in OSU and hope in its future. Here are a few examples.

FOR STUDENTS:
Cliff and Jo Anne Trow

Dr. Cliff Trow and Dr. Jo Anne Trow are both emeritus faculty at OSU; Cliff was a history professor in the College of Liberal Arts before becoming an Oregon State Senator, and Jo Anne was OSU's last Dean of Women, its first female Vice President, and Vice Provost for Student Affairs.

While the Trows have given generously to many areas at OSU, they have focused much of their philanthropy on the Cliff and Jo Anne Trow Presidential Scholarship.

Last summer they drew up estate plans that will endow this scholarship fund and benefit top OSU students in perpetuity. The Trows are members of the August LeRoy Strand Society.

FOR OREGON:
Mike and Jane Newton

Professor Michael Newton taught forest science at OSU for more than 40 years, leading forest management research and winning accolades from students for his exceptional teaching, advising, and mentoring.

Now retired, Mike and his wife, Jane, continue to impact the College of Forestry as they build two endowed funds: the Newton Forest Research Fund and the Newton Forest Research Fellowship Fund.

Their estate plans and gifts—provided in part by the sale of timber on their own property—will ensure that OSU continues its legacy of excellence in long-term silviculture research and education. The Newtons are members of the James H. Jensen Society.

FOR THE WORLD:
Cherri Pancake

Dr. Cherri M. Pancake is Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Director of Computing & Networking for the College of Engineering, and Director of Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering, an interdisciplinary research center.

As an Intel Faculty Fellow at OSU, Cherri's work is supported in part by private gifts. She in turn models generous giving. For many years she has donated all her consulting and speaking fees to NACSE.

"Since I never even get the money (checks are made out to the OSU Foundation directly), I don't miss it!" she says. Cherri is a member of the August LeRoy Strand Society.
