During the last three fiscal years, OSU has averaged 30 realized bequests per year, with an average value of $200,000. These gifts, and other planned gifts, make an enormous difference for university programs, faculty, and students. As noted in the first example below, many donors are discovering that it's especially meaningful to combine a planned gift with others made during their lifetime. This allows them to see the impact they are making now, while being assured this impact will continue far into the future. Planned gifts are transformative:
For STUDENTS
In 2007 Gary W. Runes, '61, created the Sally Runes-Hicks Scholarship to honor a member of his family and provide support for College of Science students. He has been making annual gifts to assist students right away, and had the opportunity to meet recipient Mai Duong, a junior from the University Honors College who is pursuing a degree in chemistry. Gary also made plans to endow the scholarship with a gift from his estate.
The combination of current-use-gift-now, endowment-gift-later proved so satisfying that in April Gary created a second scholarship following the same pattern. The first Anne Runes-Wilson Scholarship will be awarded in fall 2010 while funds from an IRA will endow the scholarship in the future. For THE WORLD
The Withycombe Chair in Reproductive Biology was established with a distribution from the estate of James H. "Jim" Withycombe, '51. It honors Jim's grandfather, Oregon Governor James Withycombe, the first head of Animal Sciences and former director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon Agricultural College. The estate, which included real estate and investments, is valued at $2.7 million. The Withycombe Chair in Reproductive Biology was established in order to maintain the Department of Animal Sciences' preeminence in this important discipline, a focus that is vital to animal agriculture industries.
