The Year, and the campaign, in Review

On June 30, 2010, OSU wrapped up its second best year of fundraising in university history. Here are some highlights.

OSU'S AMAZING DONORS

Leadership gifts at the top of the scale are particularly important for campaign success, as illustrated during the last two years. In FY10 donors made 19 exceptionally generous commitments of $1M or more, which is three more gifts of this size compared to FY09. This includes:
• 2 gifts at $10M (1 gift at $5M+ in FY09)
• 5 between $2M - $4.99M (4 in FY09)
• 12 between $1M-$1.99M (11 in FY09)

As noted last month, the campaign now has received more than 100 gifts of $1M+; in fact, that total has grown to 108, including 12 gifts of $5M+.

The most significant group of leadership donors are the dedicated volunteers serving on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees.
• Current, former, and Lifetime Trustees now have committed almost $100M to the campaign, more than 16% of the total funds raised to date.
• Of those currently serving on the board, 96% have given more than $25K. Close to 80% have made gifts of $100K or more, including 13 gifts of $1M or more.

University and OSU Foundation leaders and employees also are showing their united support of the campaign.
• As of June 30, members of OSU's President's Cabinet and Provost's Council have made campaign commitments totaling more than $600,000.
• This fiscal year, 89% of these senior university leaders were President's Circle level donors, as were all members of the OSU Foundation's management team.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

The Campaign for OSU was designed to increase support for four major areas: scholarships, faculty, facilities, and programs. All of these areas made substantial progress in FY10, including surpassing the overall goals for facilities ($126.25M) and programs ($226.25M).

The $100 Million for Students scholarship initiative currently stands at 96%. (See the video of OSU students expressing their thanks after gifts reached the $90M mark this spring.)

Commitments in the campaign to support faculty endowments passed the $50M milestone this year, in addition to other gifts for faculty support. (Overall, donors have committed more than $177M for OSU endowments, representing 83% of the goal.) The Provost's Faculty Match Program was launched on June 1 to provide extra incentive for OSU deans and donors to increase support for faculty endowments. Two couples already have responded to this opportunity; watch for details in the next Monthly Campaign Update.

The College of Business building project has generated fresh momentum for facilities support. The initiative was launched with two leadership gifts ($10M from Ken and Joan Austin and $6M from the family of Al and Pat Reser, of which $4M is a challenge) and now stands at $20M towards the $30M fundraising goal. Campus is bustling this summer with construction projects backed by private investors.

Since December, three colleges and units — Business, Forestry, Linus Pauling Institute — have exceeded their overall campaign goals. (Other units that previously met this milestone are Central Initiatives, Agricultural Sciences, Education/4-H, Health and Human Sciences, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.) In addition, the colleges of Science and Engineering now stand at 90% of their goals.
