Joyce Collin Furman Hall
Education Hall, originally built in 1902, re-opened as Joyce Collin Furman Hall in January 2012, following a complete renovation. An iconic structure at the campus’ east entrance, the renovated building blends historic charm with high-tech touches. The exterior seismic upgrades were funded by the state, and the interior renovations were made possible by the generosity of private donors, including a $2 million gift from William A. Furman through the Joyce N. Furman Memorial Trust.
Designed by Fletcher Farr Ayotte, Inc., the building is LEED Silver equivalent and is much more efficient with new insulation, water-saving fixtures, and a dependence on natural lighting. According to project managers at Fortis Construction, Inc., of Portland, Ore., the renovation has been nearly waste-free through the reuse and recycling of materials.
A public ceremony on April 17 welcomed more than 100 friends and donors to campus for the official grand opening.
Furman Hall is named in memory of Joyce Collin Furman ’65, who received her teaching degree in math education at OSU. Her husband, William A. Furman, made the lead gift to honor Joyce, who was an Oregon philanthropist and a strong advocate for homeless youth. Joyce Furman served on the OSU Foundation’s Campaign Steering Committee for several years, guiding the fundraising efforts for The Campaign for OSU.
