Science Sorority Sigma Delta Omega, $8,700

Sigma Delta Omega is a social, non-residential organization for women interested in science — the first such sorority of its kind at OSU. The program began in spring 2006 with the vision of student Tari Tan, who wanted to create a Greek organization that focused on philanthropy and sisterhood. Membership has been as high as 45-50 students. An OSU Women's Giving Circle grant has helped the group provide much-needed science tutoring; the assistance is free to OSU students and the Sigma Delta Omega members are paid for the hours they work. The group also conducts outreach activities that encourage middle and high school girls to consider science careers; research has shown that adolescence is a critical time to engage female students in science. Sigma Delta Omega members pay dues of $100 per term and participate in a silent auction to raise funds for their program. The sorority is recognized by OSU in the Unified Greek Council.
