Tory Hagen inaugurated as Jamieson chairholder

Dr. Tory HagenOregon State University began a new tradition April 22 with the first inauguration of the holder of an endowed chair created through The Campaign for OSU.

Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues, Tory Hagen, a principal investigator in OSU's Linus Pauling Institute (LPI), became the holder of the new Burgess and Elizabeth Jamieson Chair in Healthspan Research. The chair was created through the Jamiesons' $2 million gift.

The inauguration represents the first formal step in launching the institute's Healthy Aging Program, which Hagen will direct. The program's development has been made possible by two significant events, said LPI director Balz Frei. "The first is the extraordinarily generous gift we have received from Burgess and Elizabeth Jamieson to create this endowed chair," he said. "The second was the completion of the funding package for the Linus Pauling Science Center. Without this new building, we would not have the space necessary to establish this program."

Burgess Jamieson praised Hagen's research, adding that this award is based not only on past accomplishments but on what the Jamiesons expect Hagen to achieve in the future.

"Considering our ages, please work fast," he said, drawing chuckles from the audience.

When Hagen took his turn at the podium, he responded in kind. "We're gonna get right there and get going," he said.
