Campaign expands veterinary medicine facilities

College's growth enhances animal care, research, and education

Before the new large animal arena was built, veterinary students had to examine horses for lameness outside in the parking lot, rain or shine.

Now after $12 million in expanded and improved facilities opened this May, OSU veterinary students and faculty have a host of state-of-the-art tools to better study and care for large animals.

"Our ability to teach students, work with large animal owners, and conduct critical research is taking a quantum leap forward," said Dean Cyril Clarke.

In addition to the arena, a new diagnostic wing, advanced spiral CT scanner, and equine treadmill will help veterinarians diagnose disease and injury in large animals. New laboratories and offices will accommodate the college's growing faculty and advance clinical research. Remodeled receiving facilities and intensive care unit will improve large animal care in the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Launched with a $5 million grant from the Valley Foundation, the expansion is part of major growth at the state's only veterinary college, growth which has been accomplished with the help of many donors and advocates. In recent years, the college has opened a new small animal clinic, added more than 20 faculty, and expanded its educational program so that students can now complete all four years of their studies in Corvallis.
